People are more aware of the need to care for their dogs’ teeth today than in the past. Good dental care throughout your dog’s life can prevent some health problems in senior dogs and keep your dog’s teeth in good shape as he ages. One of the ways that you can care for your dog’s teeth is by providing him with dental chews to keep his teeth clean.
There are a wide assortment of dental chews available from different manufacturers. Some of the most popular are Greenies Dental Chews, Nylabone Nutri Dent Edible Dental Chews, Nutri Dog All Natural Dental Chews, C.E.T. Oral Hygiene Chews for Dogs, and St. Jon Dental Chews. Pedigree Dentastix are new but they are also popular. You probably recognize them as the chews with the ad for “doggie dentures.”
Dental bones or chews are different from other chews for dogs because they are formulated to promote cleaner teeth and healthy gums through chewing. They can also be formulated to fight bad doggy breath. Many chews have mint added to freshen your dog’s breath.
Chewing on dental bones keeps teeth clean by scraping away tartar and food particles. It can help your dog fight plaque (which dogs can get, too). And the chewing action against the bones helps stimulate your dog’s gums to prevent periodontal disease. All of these actions together help keep your dog’s teeth clean and white and reduce potential dental problems. They also help keep his breath much nicer.
Chewing on raw bones (not cooked) is also good for your dog’s teeth for many of the same reasons. Chicken wings, necks and thighs are good for dogs, as well as turkey parts. Chewing on rawhides, however, even though it is very satisfying to your dog, does not offer the same dental benefits. Rawhides don’t scrape your dog’s teeth clean, for instance. However, they will satisfy your dog’s urge to chew.
It’s always a good idea to supervise your dog whenever you give him chews or bones, including dental chews. Some dogs will eat these chews much too quickly, for instance.
Some people like to give their dogs dog biscuits as a way to keep their teeth clean. However, dogs usually eat dog biscuits very quickly so they don’t really remove any tartar or plaque. They don’t provide much scraping action against the teeth or stimulate the gums.
Nylon dog bones can make effective dental chews for dogs. They are long-lasting and your dog can scrape his teeth against the hard nylon which removes plaque and tartar. These nylon dog bones also last a long time so your dog can chew and chew, getting a lot of benefit from them. Some are also covered with “nubs” which will massage your dog’s gums to keep them healthy.
Of course, one of the best things about dog dental chews is that dogs usually love them. For your dog, a dog dental chew is just another great treat to chew on which makes them an instant favorite.
Until next time…..

My foster Birdie came to me with a mouth full of yellow-brown teeth. Her gums were inflamed and I was sure she’d need dental ($$$). I gave her a raw bone to chew on between meals, and literally a week later the vet couldn’t believe the huge difference. It took about a month for the entire problem to be solved with just the raw bones, but it was the healthiest, cheapest, most fun choice I’ve ever made. I’ve been feeding my dogs raw for years, but I’ve never had the chance to witness such a yucky mouth turn pearly white!
